The Srikakulam Municipality was constituted in 1856 the population of Srikakulam Municipality is 1,27,950 as per the 2011 census. And total extent of Municipality is 14.12sq.km. There are 36 words in Srikakulam Municipality, Srikakulam District is the extreme northeastern District of Andhra Pradesh. This town is located at a distance of 10km from bay of Bengal, the national high way No.5 connection Chennai and Kolkata is, passing from out skirts of town. The river Nagavali is flowing from North to South, dividing the town into two parts, out of 36 wards of the town 5 wards lie in the other side of the town, Srikakulam was formally known as Chicacole, after independence it was renamed as Srikakulam. It is believed that Srikakulam town was founded by Lord Balarama, the brother of Lord Krishna.
The famous Sun-God Temple is also situated with in the Municipal limits of Srikakulam town, it is one of the ancient and very few Sun-God temples in our country the Sthalapuranam of this temple narrates that lord Devendra has installed the existing idol of the Sun-God, Commonly known as Lord Suryanarayana Swami Varu. The archeological experts say that the stone inscription available in the temple show that the rules of Kalinga Kingdom Devendra Varma must have built this temple in the later half of the 7th Century A.D
